Technical, scientific cooperation surpasses monitoring in Iran-IAEA ties

Tehran, IRNA – A glance at the statements made by the chief of the UN nuclear watchdog in his trip to Tehran suggests that technical and scientific-research cooperation has gained a special position in the entity’s ties with Iran.

Director General of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi paid a visit to Iran this week, meeting with Head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Mohammad Eslami.

Grossi made important remarks in his joint press conference after the meeting which bespeaks of a different relationship between Iran and the IAEA in the future.

Expansion of science-research cooperation

A very important point made by Grossi in the joint press conference was his emphasis on expansion and boosting technical and scientific cooperation and help transfer the knowledge in different areas of nuclear technology to Iran.

This suggests a deviation in the UN’s nuclear chief from his remarks in the previous Tehran trips. IAEA negotiations were previously focused on safeguards and monitoring issues, but recent remarks include new topics such as technical cooperation and knowledge transfer.

Iran has considerable progress in different fields of nuclear technology, including in medicine, nuclear power, quantum and laser technology, agriculture, etc. This has shown the world that no limitation and sanction would overshadow Iran's scientific activity in the nuclear area.

That said, the IAEA is expected to adopt a new approach in its relationship with Iran, deploying nuclear diplomacy and removing political game. This would cause a new era of knowledge exchange, scientific information transfer and technology development in Iran-IAEA relationship.
